Weekly Review: Los Angeles/Dallas auditions

Los Angeles and Dallas have been visited a few times by American Idol and usually there are people worth seeing for 60 minutes. However this season we saw a minuscule amount talent in either city.
In Los Angeles there was talent and yet very little to jump up and down about. The guest judges (Avril Lavigne and Katy Perry) were less than interesting and the episode gave nothing exciting. So it is from the Dallas auditions we will be taking our highlights from. Dallas provided three favorites and two rather interesting judges (Neil Patrick Harris and Joe Jonas).

Dave Pittman

Dave Pittman stepped into the judges room with an inspiring story and an amazing voice. I really hope he makes it in Hollywood!

Erica Rhodes

The former Barney actress came in with a rather...interesting get up and a voice that kept us interested!

Todrick Hall

He worked with Fantasia on stage and now he's looking for some fame of his own. We're waiting for it too!

IdolWood Spotlight

Anoop Desai

Anoop Desai auditioned for American Idol for a very tragic and personal reasons. Little did he know that by auditioning he would become an Idol mainstay and a sensation. Not only did he break boundaries (becoming only the second Indian American to become a major finalist) but he also gave us great performances that all had Anoop's special touch.
Having been signed by JS2 Communications, Desai has announced that he will be releasing a single in the Spring of 2010 and his album will follow shortly after.
Desai will no doubt become a musical sensation much as he was on Idol. He is truly talented and we can already see great things in his future.

Weekly Review: Chicago/Orlando auditions

It seems like this weeks episode brought little interest contestant wise. And although the guest judges (Shania Twain and Kristen Chenoweth) were very good, the talent was shortcoming. Especially in Chicago.
So IdolWood has only decided to highlight our two favorites from this week.

Charity Vance

This sweet 16 year old has a touch of soft soul and displayed her unique style that was all her own.

Matt Lawrence

He found himself in bad waters awhile back but with this audition it looks like good times are ahead.

Album Review- Jordin breaks out sophomore

A fun and interesting blend of R&B and pop, Battlefield is an album that is both expected and widely liked from Idol winner Jordin Sparks. Her vocals are as powerful as ever, and the music is as likable as all the radio hits currently out. Her sophomore album shows an older, musically mature Sparks and it gives an insight into why she was the 2007 winner of American Idol.

No Parade, a piano based ballad is a perfect rendition of heartache. Sparks' vocals are amazing and the lyrics are some of the best on the album. The best song on the entire record however is Battlefield (Written by hit-maker and OneRepublic frontman Ryan Teddar) it is no surprise that it was the first single and gave Sparks another hit under her belt.

Battlefield is a successful release for Sparks and it is an indication as to the high standards she has set for herself musically. I'manticipating her next single and for whatever she releases in the coming year. I'm excited to see Jordin Sparks' 2010

Weekly Review: Boston/Atlanta auditions

This week showcased as much talent as we have ever seen. The contestants ere fresh, ready, passionate, and sometimes hilarious. Nothing has come short from the moment the auditions got under way. As usual we hear Ryan Seacrest welcoming us, as delightful as ever before, and then we see multitudes of talent (some not so much) storm through the doors to try to get their ticket to Hollywood. The judges can be brutal, harsh, but altogether mostly honest and totally true. However IdolWood did see some standouts, a few who we will be pulling for once Hollywood week goes under way.

In Boston, a rain drenched day wasn't enough to cease the talent that showed off their fabulous vocal abilities. Victoria Beckham acted as the guest judge as we saw so much talent that is truly unforgettable. Here are our favorites from Boston.

Maddie Curtis-

The soulful 16 year old blew us away with her powerful vocals and amazing story!

Luke Shaffer
Luke Shaffer sang Secondhand Serenades "Fall For You" and it immediately got us liking him!

Justin Williams
Cancer survivor Justin Williams was as talented as he was inspirational. His vocals got us telling everyone to look out for him standing out in Hollywood!

Atlanta was no slacker when it came to talent. The usual abundance of talent rang through honestly! Here are our favorites from Atlanta as Mary J. Blige acted as guest judge!
Vanessa Wolfe
An honest, charming, and true southern girl Vanessa Wolfe gave us the kind of country the south is known for!

Holly Harden
When "Guitar Girl" came into the judges room we were all expecting another joke and go around. However when she opened her mouth to sing, we were all caught off guard! we're expecting to be unexpectedly surprised during Hollywood week!

Over all they passed through 56 people this week, let's wait with anticipation to see who else makes it in the coming weeks!

Idol Spotlight:

David Hernandez

In the 2008 American Idol season David Hernandez landed the spot in the top 12, based on his easy vocals and interesting stage persona. However during this time a scandal rocked the stage of Idol. Hernandez's past was revealed and was quickly eliminated from the show. Whether or not his elimination actually had anything at all to do with the details of his past still remains an unanswered topic but what is known is the fact that David Hernandez was a very talented singer.
Hernandez appeared on the American Stars In Concert tour with Season 6 finalist Gina Glocksen and season 8's Michael Sarver and Alexis Grace. In Mid-January he will be on the Ballroom with a Twist as the lead singer which will run through mid-March.

He also has released a Christmas album that is available at cdbaby.com/DavidHernandez and I-Tunes. The album is called This Christmas.

Album review- Katharine McPhee's sophomore

Accomplishing a feat not many pop stars before her have, Katharine McPhee has shown a much more mature side to her self titled debut album in 2007. Three years of wait and finally McPhee has released Unbroken, having co-written six of the tracks, it is a successful accomplishment for her music career.

Although the album is packed with beautifully sung vocals, smoothly arranged music, and lyrics that make you feel what emotions they are meant to convey, there are some that do stand out.
Had It All, an ode to what has been lost and what was thrown away. McPhee's vocals are strong as usual and the lyrics (co-written by Kara Dioguardi) are thoughtful. Terrified, about the feelings of fear before falling into a new relationship, is also a track that is highlight. Another song is Surrender, a love song that delivers the willing feeling of love and the arresting wonder of surrendering to it, a beautiful melody and flawless vocals are given.

If Unbroken is any indication of what is to come from McPhee in the future all of IdolWood and the hoards of music lovers will certainly anticipate what comes next.
